Department History
The Berea Public Service District was established in 1954 to provide fire protection and sewer service to an 18 square mile area in western Greenville County of South Carolina. The district is managed by a board of three Commissioners elected for six year terms. The current members of the Commission are Harold Vaughn-Chairman, D.B. Wilson-Treasurer and Sonny Clamp-Secretary. Until 1971 the fire department was operated out of a single bay building located on Butler road at the current location of Greenville County EMS Station 8. The new fire station, Station 1, and business offices were built on White Horse Road in 1971. When the new building was built the department hired two full-time firefighters to man the station on a 24/24 shift schedule. The department changed to a 24/48 shift schedule in the early 1980's. In 1993 the department opened the first substation, Station 2, located on Old Hunts Bridge Road. Construction of the second substation began in the summer of 2006 on Sulphur Springs Road. Station 3 opened in the summer of 2007. The fire department currently protects the citizens of the Berea area with 24 full-time firefighters, 8 volunteer firefighters, 1 Assistant Chief and 1 Chief with an ISO rating of 3. In the Summer of 2006 the department completed construction of a 2 acre training facility at Station 2.
